Background
HWTF has committed $10.2 million to establish a three-year community-based grant program that serves schools and communities across North Carolina. A Request for Grant Proposals (RFP) was issued on May 5, 2003 for grant proposals to accomplish the following goals:

A total of 96 local and statewide organizations and agencies responded, and in November 2003, the first phase of grants was awarded to 17 community-based organizations, totaling $6.8 million. In April 2004, a second phase of grants totaling $1.8 million was awarded to four community-based organizations. These grantees are implementing intervention programs, school and after-school physical activity programs, and nutritional counseling.

Training and technical support for the grantees is provided by the Duke University Health System, Department of Community and Family Medicine under a grant funded at $770,000 over four years.

An outcomes analysis of the grant program is being conducted by the East Carolina University, Department of Family Medicine under a grant funded at $414,500 over three years.
